HOWARD SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM

Jo Enke

Vocal Music Teacher

The Howard School vocal music program involves approximately 250 students in grades 4, 5 and 6.  In each grade students sing songs and play musical instruments from a variety of areas and cultures.

VOCAL MUSIC GOALS:

Students will:

·        realize that music is an expressive art;

·        value involvement as a music-maker and as a listener;

·        use communicative tools of language and musical notation to interpret the music of others, and to express his or her own ideas;

·        develop the ability to use nonverbal skills to interact with the musical  whole;

·        recognize that the same musical components have been combined in many ways, expressing the ideas of people of many times and places;

·        gain the ability to make musical judgments based on a bank of  knowledge developed out of many sensory experiences.

GRADES:

Music grades will be given according to the following priorities:

1.  A student’s willingness to learn, demonstrated by his/her full cooperation and attention to the lesson at hand.

2.    A student’s willingness to participate, therefore trying to develop skills and contribute to class discussions and group learning experiences.

3.     A student’s demonstration that they are growing in their understanding of musical concepts and are acquiring skills for manipulating their own musical environment.
